Testimonials from CPS Members
- “Given the stressful nature of the work we do, I find work/life balance and stress management strategies are integral to my mental and physical health and are required to prevent burnout. Yoga classes are a large part of my stress management strategy as they are grounding, calming, and a safe space in which to be my authentic self, which I find is not the case within the policing environment. Policing often requires the suppression of emotions and ignoring of body sensations while they are occurring to remain effective and professional in the service we provide to others. There is extensive research on how devastating that can be to one’s mental and physical health. For me, yoga helps to undo some of that damage by encouraging me to tune in to my emotions and to how my body feels. On particularly stressful days where I was able to make time to attend yoga around the lunch hour, I found it to be a significant ‘reset’ in my day, which significantly increased my afternoon productivity. Meaningful breaks are an important part of my stress management and work/life balance strategies, and yoga is among the most meaningful breaks I engage in, given that it encourages me to be present in mind and body. As a professional, I see it as part of my role to manage burnout, and yoga helps me do that in a meaningful, measurable way.”
- “I have been attending yoga at CPS for the past few years, and I can’t stress enough how vital this offering has been for my well-being. I am in a high-demand, high-stress job and have been exposed to some significant trauma. By being able to step away from it all and attend yoga at CPS, it gives me the mental break I need to be able to continue to do my job successfully. It reduces stress by calming my nervous system and allowing my brain to be quiet in that moment. It also gives me energy to go back to my desk and focus more clearly on the task at hand. I am so grateful for this offering at work. I wish it were mandatory for all members because the benefits are something you have to experience firsthand!”
- “I have been going to Yoga at CPS for many years. For me, Yoga has improved my physical and mental health and has reduced my stress with increased flexibility and strength. It is a valued practice that I utilize in my personal and work life. It has taught me many techniques to develop myself through exercise, stretching and relaxation with my mind and body. I have had different aliments throughout the years and by doing yoga, on my breaks at work, it has aided in my recovery. For example, I have been plagued with stress migraines (personal and work related) and/or weather pressure migraines. After taking the classes provided, I am able to effectively work through the migraines with the yoga techniques. It has shown me how to decompress when ‘things’ get to be overwhelming with a sense of calm and mindfulness.”
